HomeBreak reminder for Mac

Break reminder for Mac

CapyBreaks is a desktop break reminder for Mac. When a reminder is due, Cappy shows up on your desktop. You choose which reminders are on, and how often they run.

The 7-day trial starts the first time you open the app. You do not need a CapyBreaks account. Windows installs from the Microsoft Store. The Mac download is an Apple-silicon DMG.

See the Break reminder for Windows page for the Windows install.

What CapyBreaks does on Mac

CapyBreaks runs on the computer, not in a browser tab. Close the browser and the reminders still reach you. Start at login is on by default. On Mac, CapyBreaks registers a Launch Agent so it opens when you log in. Closing the window keeps CapyBreaks running, which is also the default. The icon stays in the menu bar, and the settings window is a normal window, so the app stays in the Dock. Cappy stays above other windows by default, near the top right of the screen.

These reminders are on when you first open the app: a general break every 60 minutes, a reminder to drink water every 30 minutes, a reminder to stretch every 45 minutes, and a posture check every 20 minutes. The posture check asks you to notice how you are sitting.

Eye Breaks stay off until you turn them on. That interval starts at 20 minutes, and the reminder asks you to rest your eyes. The eye break timer on this site is a separate 20-20-20 countdown that runs only while its browser tab stays open.

You can turn any reminder off, or set its interval from 1 to 360 minutes.

Working hours are off until you turn them on. The starting schedule is weekdays from 9:00 to 17:00. Saturday and Sunday start off. When working hours are on, a reminder that comes due outside those hours is skipped, and the timers start over when the next working period begins.

CapyBreaks is a reminder app. It will not fix back pain, headaches, or an eye condition. The Pomodoro timer on this site is a browser timer with 25-minute focus sessions. CapyBreaks keeps its own reminder intervals on your Mac desktop.

How breaks and reminders work

Breaks, every 60 minutes

On by default. Cappy says "Take a break!"

Drink water, every 30 minutes

On by default. Cappy says "Drink some water!"

Stretching, every 45 minutes

On by default. Cappy says "Time to stretch!"

Posture check, every 20 minutes

On by default. It asks you to notice how you are sitting.

When a reminder is due, Cappy appears with a short message. A break says "Take a break!" Water says "Drink some water!" Stretching says "Time to stretch!" An eye break says "Rest your eyes!" The timer for that reminder then starts over.

A short sound plays with the reminder. Volume starts at 70 percent, and you can set it from 0 to 100. The message bubble above Cappy is on until you turn it off.

An optional full-screen break lock is off until you turn it on. With it on, a countdown replaces the small reminder. You can wait it out or skip it. The countdown is 20 seconds for a break, 20 seconds for an eye break, 30 seconds for water, 60 seconds for stretching, and 15 seconds for a posture check. The posture screen asks you to sit up straight and relax your shoulders.

Eye Breaks stay off until you turn them on. That interval starts at 20 minutes, and the reminder asks you to rest your eyes.
